The easiest driving test centre in Great Britain, going by pass rate, is Melton Mowbray, where 69.7% of car tests were passed. Across the whole country the pass rate is 50%. Below are the 10 centres with the highest pass rates, the easiest centre in every region, and what a high pass rate really tells you. Every figure comes from the official DVSA statistics for April 2025 to March 2026.
The 10 easiest driving test centres
These are the centres with the highest pass rates out of every centre that carried out at least 1,000 car tests in the year. Very small centres, mostly on Scottish islands, are left out, because a handful of tests can make their rate look much higher or lower than it really is.
| # | Test centre | Pass rate | Tests in a year |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Melton Mowbray | 69.7% | 1,984 |
| 2 | Barrow-in-Furness | 69.6% | 1,699 |
| 3 | Dorchester | 69% | 4,353 |
| 4 | Kendal | 65.1% | 2,231 |
| 5 | Tunbridge Wells | 64.5% | 5,726 |
| 6 | Abergavenny | 64.2% | 5,924 |
| 7 | Yeovil | 63.4% | 7,493 |
| 8 | Lee-on-the-Solent | 63.2% | 8,502 |
| 9 | Ipswich | 62.3% | 11,466 |
| 10 | Bangor | 62.2% | 4,032 |
Most of the list is market towns and smaller cities: places with quieter roads, fewer multi-lane roundabouts and less heavy traffic than a big city centre.
The easiest busy test centres
If you live in or near a big town, these are the centres with the highest pass rates among those carrying out more than 10,000 tests a year.
| # | Test centre | Pass rate | Tests in a year |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Ipswich | 62.3% | 11,466 |
| 2 | Norwich | 61.7% | 12,541 |
| 3 | Farnborough | 59.7% | 10,482 |
| 4 | Sidcup | 58.7% | 14,318 |
| 5 | Gillingham | 56.4% | 14,886 |

The hardest driving test centres
At the other end, these five centres had the lowest pass rates among centres with at least 1,000 tests.
| # | Test centre | Pass rate | Tests in a year |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Wolverhampton | 34.3% | 11,561 |
| 2 | Wednesbury | 35% | 7,508 |
| 3 | Dunfermline | 36.4% | 5,529 |
| 4 | Featherstone | 36.4% | 13,193 |
| 5 | Gateshead | 37.5% | 9,512 |
A low pass rate does not mean the examiners are stricter. These centres cover busy roads, complex junctions and heavy traffic, and the marking is the same everywhere.
What a high pass rate really tells you
- Every test is marked the same way. Examiners follow one national standard, so no centre is officially easier than another.
- The roads make the difference. Quieter roads, simpler junctions and less traffic give you fewer chances to make a serious fault.
- Who takes the test matters too. Some centres see more learners who have had plenty of lessons. That pushes the rate up without the test being any easier.
- Knowing the area matters most. You will usually do best at a centre whose roads you have practised on. A high pass rate an hour away can be worse for you than an average one around the corner.
Should you travel to an easier centre?
You can take your test at any centre in Great Britain. If you choose one further away, practise on its roads first, ideally with an instructor who teaches there. Remember the rules once you have a test: you can only move it to one of the three centres nearest to where it is booked, so choose carefully at the start.
Every centre page shows its own pass rate, how it compares with the national figure and the centres around it. Find yours on our test centres list, or compare waits on our waiting times table.
