If the booking service shows nothing at your centre, you are not doing it wrong. At the latest count 146 of 317 test centres in England, Scotland and Wales had nothing free inside the whole booking window.
Why there is nothing showing
The DVSA only lets anyone book 24 weeks ahead. When a centre is busy, every slot inside those 24 weeks is already taken, so the service has nothing to show you. The number you see is not a measure of demand, it is the edge of the window.
That last figure is the important one. Half of everyone who sat a test waited under twelve weeks, not twenty-three. They did not wait out the date they were first offered. Something earlier came free and they took it.
What it does not mean
- It does not mean nothing will appear. Dates come free every day when other learners move or cancel theirs.
- It does not mean there is a waiting list. There is no list and no queue position. Whoever is looking when a date appears takes it.
- It does not mean phoning will help. DVSA customer services cannot create appointments that are not in the system.
The three things that actually work
- Book the far-off date anywayYou cannot move a test you do not hold. Take what you are offered, then improve on it. It costs nothing extra.
- Look at nearby centresThe wait swings enormously. The shortest in the country right now is 5.8 weeks and the longest is the full 24. Our waiting times table has every centre, and each one has its own page.
- Have someone watch for cancellationsThe dates that come free go in minutes. Either check constantly yourself, or have it done for you.
Before you move anything
Three rules decide what you can do with a booking you already hold:
- You get two changes on a car test
- You need 10 full working days' notice to change or cancel without paying again. Monday to Saturday count, Sundays and bank holidays do not
- You can only move to one of the three centres nearest to where the test is booked, or back to the one you first booked at
How we help
Tell us your centre and the months that suit you, and we watch for an earlier date on your behalf. You hear by SMS and WhatsApp the moment one appears. Nothing to pay upfront, and you only pay if we find you a test and you take it.

Questions about missing test dates
Why are there no driving test dates at my centre?
Because every slot inside the 24 week booking window is taken. Nearly half of all centres are in that position.
Do new driving test dates come out at a certain time?
A new week is released at 6am every Monday, always 24 weeks ahead. Earlier dates appear at any time, whenever somebody cancels or moves theirs.
Is there a waiting list for driving tests?
No. There is no list to join and the DVSA cannot tell you when something comes free.
Should I book a far away date or keep waiting?
Book it. You cannot move a test you do not hold, and holding one gives you something to improve on.
Which test centres have the shortest waits?
It changes every month. The full table of every centre in England, Scotland and Wales is on our waiting times page.
